Overview of the Directorate

Academic Standards and Quality Assurance Directorate isestablished in 2014 following the promotion of the former Kotebe College of Teacher Education to Kotebe University College.  The former General Education Quality Improvement Program Coordinating Office was upgraded to function in a full potential in enhancing the quality assurance activities at higher education level. Since then, the directorate is currently running various quality matter issues in collaboration with different organs in excelling the University at multiple core events.

The directorate intends to contribute for the mission of the University in the production of competent graduates which are capable to carry and satisfy the growing demand of intellectual and qualified manpower of the Addis Ababa City Administration in a more specific scope and the country in the wider intention.The directorate is expected to support in attaining the desired goals by evaluating the University’s core activities against national and international benchmarks. The directorate shall employ evidence based quality assurance mechanisms to have a basis for analysis and conclusions from which improvements can be made.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Directorate

Academic Standards and Quality Assurance Directorate has an overall role to:

  • Coordinates and monitors the development and implementation of academic quality assurance internal system (strategies and Procedures)
  • Ensures appropriate guidance and support of the University quality enhancement procedures, policies and strategies;
  • Develop University level quality standard, undertake academic quality audit on periodic basis, follow up and rectify the deficiencies revealed by the audit, maintain appropriate documentation of the audit;
  • Ensure compliance with the University’s quality assurance framework to meet the required standards;
  • Overviews and facilitates the management of external academic quality audits and similar events;
  • Represents the University regarding quality assurance design to external bodies;
  • Provides/facilitates training regarding quality assurance design to external bodies;
  • Provides/facilitates training awareness workshops regarding academic quality assurance procedures, policies and strategies to the University academic staffs;

Mission

The mission of ASQAD is to ensure the relevance and quality of programs, research, and community services in KMU’s intent to produce competent and responsible citizens at all levels through need based curricula; problem solving research; adapting and transferring technology; and providing demand driven community services.

Vision

Assisting KMU’s aspiration to be a widely recognized Metropolitan University in Africa by 2025 through assurance and enhancement of the quality and standards of its core activities

Objectives

ü  Coordinates the development and implementation of academic quality assurance systems of KMU.

ü  Ensures appropriate guidance of the University quality enhancement procedures, policies and strategies.

ü  Develop University level quality standards.

ü  Improving relevance and quality of education and programs at the University.

ü  Undertake institutional orprogram level academic quality audit on periodic basis, follow up and rectify the deficiencies revealed by the audit.

ü  Assure the relevance and quality of core services provided by KMU.

ü  Improve the quality of core services through enhanced support processes.

ü  Facilitates the management of external academic quality audits.

ü  Facilitate the development of a culture of continuous quality improvement in achieving academic excellence

ü  Support Schools/Faculties, Departments, Program Units in quality care matters.

ü  Provides training regarding quality assurance design.

ü  Facilitates training awareness workshops regarding academic quality assurance procedures, policies and strategies to the University academic staffs;
