Overview of the department

An environmental issue is not a regional issue and rather it is a global issue.  Most of the environmental problems are generated in the cities not in rural areas.  Waste generation (both liquid and solid) and disposal, emission of waste gases, pollution of water, air and soil, deforestation for construction, roads and transportation are mainly problems associated with the expansion and formation of new cities and towns.  Thus, training qualified personnel in B.Sc in Urban environment management is a pressing issue.

The need for Urban Environmental Management in Addis Ababa appears more pressing and timely for the following reasons.

1. The city is growing and expanding enormously. With growth and expansion environmental problems, unless given due attention, are aggravated.  To tackle these and other problems in a rational way, training Environmental managers is mandatory and tempting.

2. The world as a whole and the country specifically are the part of environmental problems existing currently in the world.  The current environmental problem requires concerted effort by all countries and peoples of the world as a whole.  Thus, training skilled man power in urban environmental management helps to alleviate or mitigate these problems.

3. The major attributes to most environmental problems in Ethiopia is related to poor environmental management conditions.  Recurrent drought, inconsistent rainfall, over flooding and extreme cold and hot weather conditions are related to environmental management.  Thus, the existing subjects and fields of study will not be complete to address environmental problems unless helped by qualified and trained environmental managers.

4. The need to address naively emerging environmental problems required training of qualified good number of these professional.  It is obvious that the changes Ethiopia is undergoing to increase productivity and industrial growth will have adverse environmental health challenges unless pro-actively tackling through qualified professionals in the field.

Thus, the curriculum has to cope-up with the existing and anticipated future situation.  It should also be a competent curriculum, which must answer the question of the nation and ultimately the world.  Therefore, the academic perspective and the graduate profile in Urban Environmental Management should address such complex and multi-faceted environmental problems.
