Overview of the Institute

Urban development is the focus of many countries of the world including Ethiopia as urbanization poses huge pressure on the urban realm especially on transport demand, housing and land management, climate change, urban environment management problems, urban housing problems, etc. Such complex urban problems need trained man power to properly manage and bring sustainable and livable cities.

Thus, Kotebe Metropolitan Universiy has officially opened the Institute of Urban Development Studies’ in 2008 E.C with four fields of studies’ to build the capacity of Addis Ababa City Administration civil servants that will help solve critical problems observedin Addis Ababa. Among these fields of studies Urban Transport Management, Urban Land Administration, Urban Environment Management, and Entrepreneurship and Business Management.

To realize its objectives, the institute has engaged highly qualified staff members having a wealth of research, teaching, and community service experiences in different higher institutions of the country. There are about 20 staff members, of which, 1 PhD holder, 2 Associate professors, 16 M.A holders and 1 lab technician.

Objectives of the institute

The general objective of the institute of urban development studies’ is to produce highly qualified persons in the fields of Urban Transport Management, Urban Land Administration, Urban Environment Management, and Entrepreneurship and Business Management who will be competent in promoting and managing the overall socio-economic, environmental and political developments of the fast growingAddis Ababa in particular and other urban areas of Ethiopia in General through the development of interdisciplinary education and research and community services.

Vision of the institute

The vision of the institute of Urban Development Studies’ is to make the institute of urban development studies’ sustainable and the leading center of excellence in Ethiopia, in education and training, and research and community services in the fields of Urban Transport Management, Urban Land Administration, Urban Environment Management, and Entrepreneurship and Business Management and ensure sustainable urban development.

Mission of the Institute

The mission of the Institute of Urban Development Studies’ is to produce high level professionals that will put their efforts to solve urban problems, provide training and guidance in governmental and non-governmental institutions of Addis Ababain their field, and to produce well-trained and qualified specialists that will work in various capacities in Addis Ababa and other urban areas in Ethiopia. Furthermore, the mission of the instituteis stretched to conduct policy-relevant research, trainings and consultancy services to governmental and non- governmental organizations that work in Addis Ababa.

As a young institute, Urban Development Studies’ Institute is running to work jointly withgovernmental and non-governmental domestic and international organizations and institutions who are interested in the fields of transport, land, environment, and the like.
