Overview of the Department

Department of Civic and Ethical Studies of College of Social Sciences of Kotebe Metropolitan  University has a mission of offering relevant, efficient  and quality education and training; conducting demand driven research and rendering   & efficient community services.

According to the Ethiopian Higher Education Proclamation No. 650/2009 and its own charter (Council of Ministers Charter Regulation No 235/2011), KMU is mandated to establish, organize and determine the status, functions and responsibilities of academic units, and close down any of them when the University finds it appropriate.

Accordingly, Department of Civic and Ethical Studies is established to function as an academic unit in the university.  The Department is also mandated to:

 

• Design and implement undergraduate and graduate programmes and short-term trainings in accordance with the needs of the university;

• Disseminate research works as well  as hold discussion forms to deliberate upon the result;

• Establish and run academic journals and newsletters;

• Upgrade the qualifications of its academic staff and enhance continuously their professional competency;

• Contribute specially to the institutional capacity building of other public and non-profit -making private institutions, including the upgrading of the qualifications of their academic status;

• Cooperate with the Faculty and Institutional Quality Assurance Directorate on  relevance of education and quality matters;

• Carry out such other activities that accord with its objectives and the mission, vision and objectives of the faculty and university.

 

Mission

The mission of the department is to build competent, ethical and participant citizens in the overall development of the country.

 

Objectives of the Department

  • To provide the widest needs of the city administration of Addis Ababa and the  national market with graduates who have a civic knowledge and competence in the vast area of Civic and Ethical Studies; who have developed a remarkable degree of capacity and responsibility so that they could effectively participate in the socio-economic and political problems of the Country;
  • To supply graduates equipped with multidisciplinary approach that could effectively contributes in addressing the multifaceted problems of Ethiopian societies;

To produce Graduates that are bound to democratic and Ethical standards, skilled with the art of deliberation and reasoning that play exemplary role in the society.
