Overview of the Department

 The Department of English Language and Literature was established during the first days when the university was founded as Teachers’ Training Institute/College. The department has long been accumulating venerable experience through rendering academic services at degree and diploma levels.  Since June 2015, the department has also been delivering postgraduate program in TEFL. Inside the department is the ELIC (English Language Improvement Center) that plays a myriad of roles which boost the English language proficiency of both the internal and external community of the university. Currently, the department has 25 staff members, of which about eleven are Ph.D. holders, five of them are on study leave on various fields at Ph.D. level and one of them is on M.A. study.

Mission

 To produce well-trained, knowledgeable, skillful and disciplined citizenry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in English language and literature;   to carry out assistive research as well as to render community services to resolve the problems of society on burning issues of the metropolitan and the state.

 Objectives

  • To produce well-trained, knowledgeable, skillful and disciplined citizenry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels that can serve both the capital and the state in English language and literature ;
  • To carryout assistive research in English language and literature;
  • To implement brand new and apposite community services in Addis Ababa through sharing and gaining experiences with others in English language and literature.
