Overview of the Department

 Preschool department is one of the oldest departments in the College of Education and Behavioral Studies and it organizes Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) programs.  Early Childhood  Care  and  Education  is  fundamental  for  developing  basic  learning  attitudes  and  improving  the  quality, efficiency  and  effectiveness  of  preschool  and  it is crucial  in  the  efforts  to  improve  the quality  of  general  education. The department currently offers training at certificate and diploma level. In the near future, it has planned to start BA degree in ECCE. The mode of delivery is regular, extension and summer program.  

Mission

          The mission of preschool department is to:

  • Develop  professionally competent teachers  at  the  preschool  level  who  have  the  desired academic  knowledge, professional  skills, citizenship attitudes, and  ethical values.
  • Support  the  present  revised  preschool  curriculum  and  the values and  goals put forward  in the curriculum frame work for the Ethiopian education(KG- Grade 12).

 Objectives

The objectives of preschool department are to:

  • Develop pre-service and in-service students’ the knowledge, skills and dispositions required to meet the standards set by the Ministry of Education for preschool teachers.
  • Develop pre-service and in-service students’ knowledge and skills to foster the holistic development (socio-emotional, physical, cognitive, language) of preschool children that underlines for ECCE in Ethiopia.
  • Develop in preschool pre- service and in- service students the skill to design and implement attractive and participatory methods in teaching and learning process.
  • Create awareness of teaching as a respected profession in which each effective teacher educator and teacher can grow and succeed in a life-long career.
  • Develop positive relationship between the colleagues and the surrounding communities and preschools through which both benefit and through which pre- service and in- service students see models that can be practiced in developing good preschool  community relationships in their assigned preschools.
  • Develop a “service mentality” among staff and students at College of Education and Behavioral Studies through which the college, as a center of privilege, accepts the obligation to provide services to the community and to those less fortunate.
